Vegetable tanned leather is produced by dipping the hide of an animal into a solution of ground plank bark and leaves . The solution could also contain chestnut , oak or other trees . Old school tanneries still use earthen pits to die their leather .
One of the best qualities of veg tanned leather is that it gets better with age , the often it is used the better the quality .
